-I received a call from dispatch advising of a holdup alarm at **** bank at the corner of ****** and ******** streets. Moments later dispatch advised that the suspect, a white male in a dark jack, jeans and ski mask had displayed a silver pistol and demanded money, he's left the bank and headed south on foot. I and detective ****** were on scene within one minute. Dispatch advised the scene was clear and I advised to have an employee come out and meet us. I left Detective ****** at the scene and called for additional units and a k9 to assist in the search. I also radioed dispatch to broadcast a BOLO [be on the look out] for the suspect and advise area agencies of our situation. -
Yup, that's how I stated my day. Police work goes from bordem to stark terror at the speed of light. I and about 20 other officers and the FBI [when they decided to show up] spent the rest of the day canvasing the area, interviewing witnesses and checking video from nearby various businesses.
With nearly 20 years on the job you'd think I'd grow tired of chasing idiots. Well, yes I do, but this is the big league.
I joke with my brother [and sister] officers that I'm a superhero. I have a suit, I have armor, I have a secret headquarters, I have a specially equipt vehicle, I have weapons at my disposal and access to information that most folks do not. I can drive through the city and chase bad guys by night and hopefully bring them to justice. For what ever reason, I'm one of the ones who runs toward the thing everyone else is running away from.
Unlike the comics though we're not revived in the next series. Getting dead is a possibility that we deal with. This particular moron is armed with a large caliber revolver, should he point it at me or someone else reality becomes crystalline.
I illustrate for DC. I live the reality. I walk in two worlds. There are other artists here at DA that do or have done exactly what I do now. They shall remain nameless but they know who they are.
I do my best to do my job right so I can come home, kiss my family and recreate my world with what I do.
Without sounding preachy or childing,... just be safe out there and remember rule #7, always be aware of your surroundings. It's a bit bad world we live in.
Just wanted to share that with you.
